EPA Commits to Not Saving the Bay, Again

MorningAGClips, EPA Recommits To Next Phase of Chesapeake Bay Cleanup. "EPA’s fiscal 2025 budget calls for Congress to continue funding the Bay Program"

As the partnership to clean up the Chesapeake Bay nears its 2025 deadline, EPA Administrator Michael Regan today renewed the agency’s commitment to leading the many federal agencies working together to restore the Bay into the next chapter of cleanup effort.

Regan spoke in response to a question from Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) at today’s Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on EPA’s fiscal year 2025 budget request.

Cardin asked if Regan and EPA would commit to reinstating the EPA-led Federal Leadership Committee, which was created in 2009 under a Chesapeake Bay restoration executive order signed by President Obama. The Committee developed and coordinated the work of the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Homeland Security, Interior, and Transportation under what became the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement.

Regan said EPA would “absolutely” reconstitute the committee “for a fall meeting.” Regan added, “We see it as a huge opportunity to get all the executives around the table and be sure that we’re pursuing those goals that you and others would like us to pursue.”

Since 2010, the federal government, the six Bay states, and the District of Columbia have been working to meet the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint’s 2025 deadline for adopting the policies and practices to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution to the Bay and its waterways. Despite significant water quality improvements, the partners are unlikely to meet most of these goals by 2025.

EPA administers the federal Chesapeake Bay Program, which coordinates the cleanup effort. The Bay Program also provides grant funding for restoration and research activities among a wide range of federal, state, and local government agencies, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations across the Bay’s six-state watershed.

EPA’s fiscal 2025 budget calls for Congress to continue funding the Bay Program at $92 million annually.

EPA and the Bay states set out on this path back when I arrived in the region in 1985. The most recent iteration of the plan was an estimated $25 Billion plan to "save the bay" by 1925. Well, the money has been spent, and while there has been a some progress, nutrients are down, anoxia may be slightly less than in the bad old days, and seagrasses are doing better, for the most part, most the resources sought in the Bay have not recovered to the desired levels. Striped Bass are in trouble, again, crabs are up and down (as usual), and oysters, while slightly better than they had been, but nowhere near historical landings.

So for another $92 million a year, the EPA will keep on keeping on. As Milton Freidman once said,  "Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program."

WaPoo, Maryland’s high court removes Pr. George’s judge for ‘egregious’ misconduct

The Maryland Supreme Court removed Judge April T. Ademiluyi from the Prince George’s County bench this week, citing “egregious” behavior in violation of the state’s code of judicial conduct, an extreme and rare move for the state’s high court.

The specifics of the alleged misconduct are unclear because the high court did not include an explanatory opinion with its brief ruling. The court broadly cited at least a dozen codes Ademiluyi allegedly violated as a Circuit Court judge, involving her behavior with jurors, her impartiality and fairness, her compliance with the law and her cooperation with disciplinary authorities, but it did not offer specific details of the purported misconduct.

The justices wrote that a complete opinion would come at a later date.

Ademiluyi has presided over cases in the county’s circuit court since 2020, when she was elected as a judge by Maryland voters after running a grass-roots campaign.

She has alleged in complaints and court documents that her outsider status drew hostility from her judicial colleagues, creating a working environment that prompted her to file what she said was a whistleblower complaint against her supervisors in 2022.

In a statement, she asserted that her removal from the bench is retaliation for that complaint. After reporting her supervisors to the Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities, they responded with a complaint of their own, alleging misconduct by Ademiluyi in hundreds of pages of documents that the commission and Maryland Supreme Court deemed valid.

Her fellow judges alleged that she behaved inappropriately at the courthouse, including insubordination, unprofessionalism, tardiness and lack of participation in critical judicial training sessions.
The high court’s decision to remove Ademiluyi the same day as her hearing before the justices — issuing an immediate ruling without a complete opinion — signals an urgency to put the increasingly public saga to rest, Vinick said.

It also draws attention to the way Ademiluyi made it to the bench — by running as an independent challenger to a slate of judicial candidates.

When there is a judicial vacancy, interested candidates can apply for consideration through the governor’s office. They are scrutinized by various bar associations before coming before county-level nominating commissions, which make recommendations to the governor’s office on potential one-year appointees.

Despite a gubernatorial appointment, all judges must be elected to their jobs by Maryland voters. But candidates such as Ademiluyi can still win despite not going through the official vetting process.
Man, whatever it is, it must be awful for them to respond that strongly

Maryland, My Maryland

Hey, you weren't supposed to read those! At the Free Bacon WATCH: David Trone Goes Nuclear on Reporter for Quoting His Own Tweets

Rep. David Trone put his finger in the face of a local reporter on Tuesday and accused him of being a Republican "shill" for covering the Maryland Democrat’s claims that the criminal justice system was "racist."

Trone, the Democratic frontrunner for Maryland’s open Senate seat, took to X on Sunday to tell constituents to "face a hard truth" that the "criminal justice system is systemically racist." At a campaign event on Tuesday, Trone told Fox 5 journalist Tom Fitzgerald he should be "ashamed" for reporting on the posts. "You should be ashamed of the journalism you did yesterday," Trone said as he pointed his finger in Fitzgerald’s direction, footage of the exchange shows. "You took one line out of 20 and you should be ashamed of that type of journalism."

During the exchange, Trone’s aide tapped the congressman on the back, apparently prompting Trone to take a step back from the reporter. "And shame on Fox," Trone continued. "Fox needs to step up and do real journalism, and you didn’t do it there. You were shilling for Larry Hogan. So keep shilling for Larry Hogan. And if you want to do that, feel free to shill."

Trone said his posts to X on Sunday were "very supportive of our police" and said Fitzgerald was "just making it up" before abruptly ending the interview. Trone’s comments garnered criticism from his Democratic primary opponent Angela Alsobrooks, who said Marylanders deserve the right to police protection and that Trone has no experience in criminal justice matters.

The likely Republican nominee in Maryland’s Senate race, former Gov. Larry Hogan, said Trone’s social media posts "were terrible."

If you don't want someone to quote it, don't write it.

Tuesday Tunes - Mason Jar

Natalie Stovall and the Drive was an American country music group composed of Natalie Stovall (lead vocals, fiddle), Miguel Cancino (guitar), Zach Morse (bass), Joel Dormer (guitar, vocals), and James Bavendam (drums).

Their debut single, "Baby Come On with It", was released in February 2014 after receiving airplay on Sirius XM Radio.

Stovall was raised in Columbia, Tennessee. She had performed on the Grand Ole Opry and The Oprah Winfrey Show. She met Bavendam in college, recruited Cancino through a Craigslist ad, then met Morse and Dormer through mutual friends.

Their debut album, released on Hitshop/Warner Bros. Records, will be produced by Paul Worley and Clarke Schleicher. In advance of its release, the band released a self-titled extended play that includes the single and five additional songs. In 2014 the group released their single, "Mason Jar".

Natalie Stovall took part in season 13 of the American The Voice. In the Blind Audition broadcast on NBC on October 9, 2017, she performed Adele's "If It Hadn't Been For Love" and joined Team Blake Shelton. In the battles, she faced off against Adam Cunningham, singing Little Big Town's song, "Boondocks". Stovall lost her battle, and was sent home. However, Shelton brought her back into the competition for the playoffs, giving her one more chance as his comeback artist. She was eliminated again after her performance of "Callin' Baton Rouge" during the playoffs.

In May 2020, Stovall joined the group Runaway June. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she presented livestream performances of the Grand Ole Opry alongside Bobby Bones.
